Whats in my Make-up Bag
It’s only as I’ve become a ‘proper’ adult that I’ve really invested in a make-up bag that I carry around with me everywhere and after one of my most loved face powders smashed within the old tatty one I used to have I thought it was time I invested in a new bag, and some new make-up.
I have some really old favourites that I’ve repurchased time and time again so I’m sure I’ll never be parting with my many of my loved formulas but there are some new finds I’ve been really into lately too so I thought it was about time I shared some of my beauty secrets. Also, I’ve never shared the contents of my make-up bag before – please do excuse my mucky and shameful brushes.
I wrote a review about the brush sets I brought a while back and I’m still in love with them. These ones have survived being covered in powder and crammed at the bottom of my make-up bag for months and I still get daily use out of them. I do admit that I don’t wash these brushes as much as I should, but then who has the time to wash make-up brushes the recommended once a week? I’m a big fan of the introductory sets I picked up and I have my beady eyes on some more limited edition ones to pop onto my Christmas list for Santa because these are such a bargain for what you get. I feel like my make-up application technique improved by about 80% as soon as I got these and I’m never going back.
I used to be a devotee of the Maybelline foundations that had more of a creamy texture but I picked two of these up two summers ago when I was looking for a darker shade to match my tan and I haven’t looked back since. I really enjoy the more liquid formula and this blends so well on my skin with the right primer underneath. Only problem is that with this foundation you really need to use a primer because it sinks into your pores very quickly and also rubs off if not set with a decent powder. Great for coverage but you really need to give this product the best chance for it to perform, and perform it does.
I have a MAC primer gifted from a friend that I tend to use when I want to have a complete look, like for when I’m going out, but I’ve started to really enjoy using this particular Barry M primer for everyday. A lot of primers tend to come in such small tubes and are so unreasonably priced for the amount you get that I’d given up all hope of finding something truly value for money on the high street until I came across this. This comes in a foundation sized pump tube and you can also buy it in plain (as pictured here) as well as brightening and colour correcting. A really decent bit of kit to have in your bag for everyday primer wear.
I’ve been using this powder for donkey’s years and nothing has really compared to it for coverage since I first started using it but I’m sad to say that since taking this photo I managed to drop a brand new one all over my bedroom floor – well, it’s an improvement than on the inside of my bag. Needless to say I was pissed because I’d just brought it and even then when I went into the shops to find a replacement I couldn’t find this exact one on the shelf – and I was getting pretty desperate – so I settled for another finishing powder that just hasn’t worked the same and seems to just crumble powder all over everywhere regardless of how careful I am using it. I miss this and I mourn it even more so looking at the photos of this session – boo hoo.
I got this as a replacement for another brow product that was feeling a little boring from overuse so I invested in this instead. It’s small enough to fit into my make-up bag and is very strong on use so as long as you apply it carefully with a proper eyebrow brush it’s great for on the go brows. I do admit I’ve had a few too many accidents using this where I’ve gone a little overboard when getting used to using it but I’m a big fan of it for stronger brows when I want a bolder look – the brush included is totally pants though.
There’s nothing more I can say about this concealer that I haven’t already in this blog because it’s my favourite concealer of all time for heavy duty coverage without feeling like you’ve caked your skin in camouflage. I truly do love this and keep a pot hanging around at all times, it’s especially great because I suffer from dark circles above my eyes so I can use this underneath and around my eyes to full effect.
Pencil eyeliner, a staple in any everyday make-up bag for all manner of emergencies. Finished your whole face but you don’t have time to fiddle about with perfect liquid eyeliner flicks? Then you need a simple and always sharpened eyeliner pencil in your life. Stuff the waterproof and gel versions I love me a bog standard pencil liner in classic black and this Barry M version perfectly suits my needs whenever I need it.
As you can perhaps tell I tend to pick up a few items from one stand rather than several so this buy from Rimmel was another go at getting my products matching as I already have the brow kit. My last eyebrow kit included a pencil and I lost it within five minutes so this turned out to be a good replacement especially because of the brush on it’s lid which is great for taming those stray eyebrow hairs.
I tend to use this mascara when I want a bolder look but lately I’ve been mixing it with the Barry M Showgirl Mascara as that wand and formula tends to do a better job of separating out my individual lashes and then this one coats them for that bold look. Mascara is the only thing I can be really fussy about because I need it to do a good job and be fast-drying enough so that when I put my glasses on I don’t get black smudges all over the lenses and this tends to do a decent job of that. I’ve been using a Dior sample from the Backstage with Dior at Debenhams event recently and even though it seems to be a good mix of using both the aforementioned to get a great effects on my eyelashes it’s really wet in comparison so I will going back to my preferred Rimmel and Barry M combo when it runs out.
Nothing on this Earth compares to this liquid eyeliner for me and for under a fiver for a pot that can last me months I will never, ever stop buying it. I get quite a few comments from people IRL about how I apply my liquid eyeliner so well and apart from just knowing how to compliment my eye shape and much experience this is my number one recommendation. The brush isn’t too thin or thick and the formula isn’t too watery either. I wear this practically everyday regardless of if I am going for a bare-faced look or going out on the town, I feel almost naked without wearing this liquid eyeliner. Everything else I’ve tried just doesn’t stand up and I worked out that I’ve been using this product and its variants for over seven years atleast.
I praised this in my Summer Budget Beauty Buys and I still can’t get over that I only picked this up for a quid. The browns are right up my street and I wear the pink blusher the most, it’s just the right tone for me but the orange blusher is a little too much. What I love the most about this is how compact it is as well as the big mirror in the palette, a winner regardless of if you can’t find it in a pound shop like me and buy at full retail price.
I’ll let you into a little shameful secret of mine… I’ve been using this since I received it for Christmas in 2014. I worked out that I’ve had this in my bag and within my make-up collection for long enough and it’s really due to be chucked out soon but I just can’t seem to want to part with it. Not for everyday but for a good finisher for when I want to brighten up my make-up I’ve worn all day for drinks after work etc – it still tingles and plumps my lips whenever I wear it. I’m not into lip glosses that much now the matte lip is all the rage but this still calls to me from time to time begging to be worn when I’m going out for the night and the tingly feeling will always be fun.
I’ve tried to find the same version of this but it looks like it’s no more – but it’s not really worth it anyway. I used to wear this all of the time when I first started using it but now I’ve worn is daily it’s started to wear on me – or wear off because it hardly stays. I’d say this is more of a tinted lip balm than a proper lip product so I’m on the prowl for something to replace this and so far I’ve fallen in love with the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes… oh *fans self* I love it. Soz Collection… you still hang around in my bag for emergencies though like when I’ve misplaced my Blistex Raspberry Lemonade Blast.
